In the current pandemic, as a result of COVID -19, the regulations in England as far as taxis and private hire vehicles are concerned are that passengers do not have to wear a face covering such as a face mask that would normally cover the mouth and nose. However it is worth noting that a taxi driver could refuse to allow a potential passenger to get in the taxi unless he or she is wearing a face covering.

The above is interesting as, if you were to travel on the likes of a bus or train, you are required to wear a face covering. If you do not you could be fined £100 that could be reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

If you are in Wales, the rule is very different with regard to face coverings in taxis and private hire vehicles. Quite simply, you have to wear the likes of a face mask if travelling in a taxi in Wales.

In Scotland, you must wear a face covering if you are travelling in a taxi or private hire vehicle.

In Northern Ireland, it is not a rule that you should wear a face covering whilst travelling in a taxi or private hire vehicle.

It will be interesting how long these rules will be in place for passengers in taxis and private hire vehicles. Obviously, the rules have been put in place for the benefit of all but some may think it a little strange that countries have different regulations in place.

Obviously, anything that can be done to protect taxi drivers from contracting the coronavirus has got to be welcomed by all parties. Taxi drivers are at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19 than a lot of other occupations no doubt due to the fact that he or she can come into contact with a lot of different people during their working day.
