Well, if you are considering setting up as a taxi driver running your own business, one of the things you will need to think about is what type of work you are prepared to take on. More specifically, should you consider specialising in just doing airport transfers?
This is a difficult question to answer but we will do our best to do so. Having said that, do bear in mind that people have different opinions.
One could argue that to focus on one type of taxi service especially when you are just starting out with your taxi business is not a good idea. Is it not better to take on, within reason, whatever type of work you can muster? So, your first job of the day could be picking up a school child to take them to school. Next you could be picking someone up from a supermarket along with their weekly shopping and taking them back home.
You may then be picking up a lady from her home and taking her to a restaurant where she will meet with friends for lunch and then you will drop her back home. Next, you could be picking that child up from school and taking them home that you picked up in the morning. Your final job of the day may be to go to your local airport to pick a family up who have just enjoyed a week’s holiday in Southern Spain and dropping them back home.
As you can see in the above example, you have carried out a variety of taxi pick-ups and drop offs. However, if you were to focus on airport transfers you will have to concentrate on marketing this specific type of business and, who knows, it may take some time before you become established in providing an airport transfer taxi or private hire service.
Airport transfers can be quite seasonal with your busiest time likely to be in the summer months as this is probably the most popular period for families to take a much-needed holiday in a sunny country. How busy are you going to be in the winter months with carrying out airport transfers?
Of course, if you happen to be located around the likes of London Heathrow or Gatwick then you may pick up more airport transfer business throughout the year. Having said that though, you will be competing with many experienced taxi and private hire drivers who are well established in doing airport transfers with a regular client base that has taken them a considerable period of time to build up.
In summary, perhaps you may be best placed building your new taxi or private hire service dealing with a variety of types of pick-ups and drop-offs rather than focusing on airport transfers at least until you are well- established.
