Whilst this post relates to the amount paid for car insurance it may be that it is also relevant and of interest to taxi drivers and owners of private hire vehicles as premiums to insure such vehicles may also have gone up.
Every 3 months the price comparison website that has been around for many years called Confused.com publishes its car insurance price index giving an indication as to what has been happening to car insurance premiums.
The above website’s latest index was produced on the 24th June 2026 and is an interesting document to read that you can see on their website free of charge.
It shows that the average cost of fully comprehensive car insurance amounted to £719 per annum in the 3 months to the end of May 2026. This is a rise of £8 per annum when compared to the previous 3 months. That may only seem a small increase but it is the first rise seen since December 2023. On a positive note, if you look at what car insurance premiums were a year ago, premiums have dropped by £38 per annum. This is a reduction of 5%.
You will probably be aware that numerous factors dictate how much insurers charge for such cover such as the make and model of car, the age of the drivers, where the driver lives, the number of miles it is estimated you will drive your car in a 12 month period, what type of cover you want and where you park your car overnight such as in the garage, on the drive or on the road outside your home.
It should not surprise you to read that, on average, younger drivers cost more to insure than a mature motorist. One of the reasons is that, as a general rule, a 50 year old driver has more experience behind the wheel of a car than a 20 year old motorist and is less likely to be involved in a road traffic accident.
According to the above index, those in the age bracket 17 to 20 pay an average of 31,813 per annum yet those in the age bracket 30 to 39 pay an average of £850 per annum. We are sure that you will agree the above is a huge difference.
Where you reside has an impact on car insurance premiums. Inner London region is the most expensive with premiums averaging £1,088 per annum. The cheapest region is the South West with average premiums of £504 per annum.
