With the announcement that, at some point this year, we may well be seeing driverless taxis on the streets of London is this something that, as a taxi driver, concerns you in so much that you could be out of a job? You only have to look on Google News to read about some concerns in this respect.

There are an awful lot of taxi drivers in London who have been behind the steering wheels of their cabs for many years. He or she knows the roads like the back of their hands. They have sat an exam in this respect that may well have involved a great deal of time and dedication to studying to know many of the streets in London before even Sat Navs existed.

In the current economic climate and availability of jobs here in the UK, some taxi drivers and private hire vehicle drivers may be concerned about their futures. The prospect of having to close his or her taxi business down or being made “redundant” by a taxi firm doesn’t really bear thinking about. There will be a number of taxi drivers who are, shall we say, mature drivers and be worried that at their time of life it may be hard to find alternative work.

Looking ahead, it is going to be interesting to see if driverless taxis start to come into operation in other parts of the UK. This could, potentially, put more taxi drivers’ jobs at risk.

Of course, there may potentially be some who also benefit from driverless taxis appearing on some of our roads. It will be interesting to see if there are any benefits for passengers.

Needless to say, we will endeavor to continue to keep our readers in respect of driverless taxis here in the UK.
