Taxi drivers may find it of interest to read that, according to the Society Of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there was a significant rise in the number of new cars registered here in the UK in September 2026. According to monthly figures published by the aforementioned, new car sales amounted to 350,536 in September 2026 with this being a rise of 12% when compared with the same month in 2025. We are sure that you will agree that is a big rise and the news will be welcomed by those working or connected with the motor trade.

This is the 10th month in a row that new car sales have gone up here in the UK and it is the best performance for a September since back in 2017.

It was also interesting to hear that September 2026 also witnessed a record number of battery electric new cars being sold – 99,201 – almost 100,000. Are we shortly going to see that later figure being achieved?

One of the reasons for the continued rise in the sale of new cars in the UK is due to there being a great deal of competition with a large number of manufacturers about. There are also no doubt some quite attractive deals being offered to sell new cars with this being great news for the new car buyer.

You may also like to note that during the first 9 months of 2026 the number of new battery electric vehicles sold made up for 26.2% of all registrations. This equated to 454,947 of such vehicles. Will we see the half million barrier broken through during the month of October 2026?

Of course, there will presumably be some taxi drivers who bought a new car last month here in the UK. It is great that some taxi drivers are in a financial position to do so but there will probably be many taxi drivers who have to buy a used car to operate their taxi service business due to financial constraints.
