The number of new cars bought by people and businesses in the UK, according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), on a year to date basis to April 2025 amounted to 700,833 compared to 679,822 for the same period in 2024. That is a rise of 3.1%. The number of new petrol and diesel cars sold between those periods fell whilst the number of new electric type cars registered rose. Private new car sales rose by 6.3%, fleet new car sales rose by 1.2% and business new car sales fell by 1.9% between those periods.

However, in April 2025, the number of new cars sold here in the UK amounted to 120,331 whereas in April 2024 the figure was 134,274 – a drop of 10.4%. New petrol and diesel fuelled car sales dropped when comparing the same months in 2024 and 2025 but overall the number of new electric types of cars sold increased. Private new car sales fell by 7.9%, fleet new car sales fell by 11.9%% and business new car sales fell by 10.9% between those periods
