If you are a taxi driver you may find it of interest to read that, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new cars sold here in the UK in 2024rose in comparison to the previous year. This is good news for the motor trade industry.
In 2024, the total number of new cars registered amounted to 1,952,778 whereas in 2023 there were 1,903,054 new cars sold. That is an increase of 2.6%.
The number of new diesel cars sold totalled 123,104 in 2024 compared to 142,434 in the previous year. That is a fall of 13.6%. The number of new petrol cars sold ion 2024 amounted to 1,019,128 compared to 1,066,211 in 2023. That is a fall of 4.4%. The number of new electric cars sold increased by quite a sizeable number when comparing 2024 with 2023 but that probably will not come as a surprise to people as we can now see more electric cars on our roads.
New cars sold in the private sector in 2024 amounted to 746,276 compared to 817,673 in 2023. That is a drop of 8.7%. New cars sold in the fleet sector in 2024 amounted to 1,163,855 compared to 1,041,350 in 2023. That is a rise of 11.8%. New car sales in the business sector amounted to 42,647 in 2024 compared to 44,031 in 2023. That is a drop of 3.1%.
