If you are a taxi driver, you may find it of interest to read that the number of new cars sold here in the UK reduced by 5% in July 2025 when compared with the same month in 2024. This is concerning when you consider that in May and June 2025 there was an increase in the registration of new cars.
According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there were 140,154 new cars sold in July 2025 but there were 147,517 sold in July 2024.
In July 2025, there were 51,646 new cars sold for the private market compared to 53,355 in July the previous year – a drop of 3.2%. The market share was 36.8% in July 2025. In July 2025, there were 85,594 new cars registered for the fleet market compared to 91,523 in July 2024 – a reduction of 6.55. The market share was 61.1% in July 2025. In July 2025, there were 2,914 new cars sold for the business market compared to 2,639 in July 2024 – a rise of 10.4%. The market share was 2.1%.

Whilst writing, we thought you may also find it of interest to hear that the number of used cars sold in the UK in the second quarter of 2025 amounted to 1,996,116 compared to 1,963,395 in the second quarter of 2024. That is a rise of 1.7%. This was the tenth quarter in a row that used car sales grew. There were 4,017,106 used cars sold in the UK in the first 6 months of 2025. This was a rise of 2.2% in comparison to the same period in 2024.
