If you are a taxi driver, you are responsible for getting your passengers to their destination safely. Therefore, it is important that you do everything that is necessary to ensure this happen such as driving with care i.e. do not speed and ensure your vehicle is safe to drive.
Having picked up your passenger it may be tempting to enter into a lengthy conversation with him or her on your journey. However, it must be borne in mind that doing such a thing could prove a distraction whilst driving.
If you become distracted then this may lead to you crashing the taxi resulting in harm to you, your passenger and other people such as pedestrians or passengers in other vehicles. As a result, you may find that your taxi is off the road for an extended period of time whilst it is being repaired. Such a situation, may affect your income that is something you could do without.
After all, the economic climate is difficult enough here in the UK at the present time with people being faced with increased household expenditure.
It is difficult to find that happy medium as some passengers prefer to just sit, relax and stare out of the window of your taxi without saying a word. Others, such as those having just returned from a delightful holiday, love to tell you all about their holiday in some exotic country having stayed in a luxury hotel.
It could be considered rude if you do not have some sort of conversation with your passengers whilst transporting them if it is they who wish to speak to you. If you do not speak with them then they may consider not using you in the future nor recommending your taxi service to others thus having a negative impact on your income.
What you do not wish to find yourself in is a situation where you have picked up some people from a party at 1am to take them home and find that they are very drunk and try to enter into numerous conversations with you resulting in you being unable to concentrate on your driving. If you found yourself in such a situation, you may need to tactfully point out to them that you need to focus on driving them home safely.
In summary, it is perhaps prudent to keep conversations with passengers in your taxi to a minimum. After all, the priority is to deliver your passengers safely to where they are going.
